Eligibility Requirements

 

Age requirements

All flight attendants must be at least 18 years of age, but the minimum age requirement varies depending upon the airlines ranging between 18 - 21 years.

 

Education

Even though minimum academic qualification required is only secondary education, some airlines prefer candidates with a degree. The hiring airline will provide the essential training, as the training material is highly specific and safety sensitive to that particular airline.

 

Work experience

Flight attendants typically have 1 or 2 years of work experience in a service sector prior to their job as a flight attendant. This experience may be customer service roles in restaurants, hotels and resorts or any public service related jobs.

 

Physical attributes

Height: Normally, the height range is between 4’11” – 6’3” or between 150cm – 190cm tall. Many airlines do not have any height requirements, but the candidate should be able to reach a specified vertical height.

Weight: In some airlines, the weight standard is visually assessed to ensure your weight is proportionate to your height.

Vision: Good vision is expected with or without correctable eyewear or contact lenses.

 

Physical stamina

Swimming ability up to 50m, climbing into a life raft unaided, lifting baggage and standing for long periods are some of the physical skills that are expected.

 

Appearance

High level of personal grooming is essential such as maintaining good personal hygiene, appropriate use of cosmetics, no visible tattoos and body piercing and so on.

 

Personal qualities

Attentiveness, excellent customer service skills, communication skills, decision making capabilities and multilingual talents are highly preferred by airlines.

 

Certifications and registrations

Federal Aviation Administration requires flight attendants to hold ‘Certificated of Demonstrated Proficiency’. Also a valid First Aid Certificate is necessary. Once the initial training program is completed, they will be certified by the FAA.

 

Security clearance

Thorough 10 year background check will be conducted by the airlines including fingerprint run and drug screening.

 

Medical evaluation

Once selected, you will undergo a medical check and agility test to ensure your good health.
