PPL (Private Pilot Licence)

PPL permits the holder to act as a pilot of an aircraft privately and carry non-paying passengers virtually anywhere in good weather. If your interest is not being an airline pilot, then holding a PPL is more than enough to fly your own or rental aircraft. This licence is issued to you once you demonstrate your flying skills to an approved testing officer by passing relevant theoretical and practical examination.

You will be expected to demonstrate competent planning and management of the flight, observe rules and procedures, navigation, radio work and airmanship before successfully completing the flight. The factors to be certified as a Private Pilot Licence holder are determined by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO), but the actual implementation varies widely from country to country. Some of the common basic requirements are as follows.

  • Must be at least 16 years of age for solo flight and 17 years old to receive an airplane or rotorcraft pilot certificate.
  • Glider and balloon pilots must be at least 14 years old for solo flight, 16 years old to earn their pilot certificate.
  • Successfully demonstrate flying skills to an examiner during a flight test.
  • Should pass a physical examination by a designated aviation medical examiner.
  • Must be able to speak, read and understand English, the international language of aviation.
