The ram air turbines operate only in emergency situations as the power source if the primary and auxiliary power sources fail and lose all hydraulic pressure.
When all engines fail and the hydraulic system pressure drops below a predetermined value, the RAT will be automatically deployed into the airstream and power the vital systems such as flight control computers, essential flight instruments, radio, cockpit lighting, windshield and pitot tube de-icing.
