Flight Controls » Split aileron

As you are working on large commerical aircraft, you would have noticed that its aileron is split into three segments and wondered why?

The main reasons are

  1. At high speeds the material could flex and alter the lift or even reverse the lift direction. To avoid aileron flex, A380 outward ailerons are locked at 240 KIAS "Knots-Indicated Air Speed" for upward motion and 300KIAS for downward motion
  2. Have more controllability of the systems, such as hydraulic, cables, wires and etc. so that it can be easily maintained. (Basically fail safe)
  3. Precision control of aileron position by the use of fly-by-wire system, known as load alleviation function
