Flight Controls » Split aileron
As you are working on large commerical aircraft, you would have noticed that its aileron is split into three segments and wondered why?
The main reasons are
- At high speeds the material could flex and alter the lift or even reverse the lift direction. To avoid aileron flex, A380 outward ailerons are locked at 240 KIAS "Knots-Indicated Air Speed" for upward motion and 300KIAS for downward motion
- Have more controllability of the systems, such as hydraulic, cables, wires and etc. so that it can be easily maintained. (Basically fail safe)
- Precision control of aileron position by the use of fly-by-wire system, known as load alleviation function
